Tech hiring in India hits 18-month high

India’s technology job market continued its recovery in October, with active tech openings rising to 123,000, the highest level in 18 months, according to staffing firm Xpheno’s Active Tech Jobs Outlook for the month.

The figure is up 17% from a year earlier and 5% from September, when openings stood at 117,000. It marks a clear turnaround from the start of the year, when January openings were around 103,000, among the weakest levels in nearly five years.

IT services companies drove much of the revival, with about 66,000 active openings, also an 18-month high for the segment. Global capability centres, the India-based units run by multinational firms, had 18,000 openings. That is 64% higher than a year ago and about 15% of total tech demand.

Software product companies bucked the trend. Their openings fell to 16,000, down 16% from September and 38% from a year earlier.

Experience levels were skewed towards seasoned professionals. Mid-senior roles accounted for 68,000 openings, or 55% of the total. Mid-junior roles recorded 7,000 openings, up 40% on the month and 17% on the year.

Bengaluru remained the biggest hiring centre with 31,000 openings. Hyderabad came second with roughly 14,000, up 27% from September. Tier-2 and tier-3 cities together accounted for 40,000 openings. Work-from-office roles made up 81% of all active tech openings.

The report cautions that the figure counts active openings and should not be read as 123,000 jobs already created. The recovery also comes alongside continued layoffs in the sector, as employers lean towards versatile, full-stack talent while AI reshapes job roles.
